Easter Weekend On Caye Caulker

On April 27, 2011 in Belize, Caye Caulker, News

Easter weekend is always a big one on Caye Caulker, and this Easter was no exception. Loads of locals boarded the water taxi and made their way to the island to spend their holiday in the sun and water. There were DJ’s pumping out music from HUGE speakers on the new deck at The Split all weekend and the loud beats definitely drew in the crowds. People were piled around the bar ordering drinks, while others just relaxed in the water or laid on the sand, and the dance floor opened up long before the sun went down each day. There was a great vibe in the air.

But the celebrations really kicked off on Saturday night with several parties happening across the island. Oceanside had live bands playing, Jello bar had Belizean Punta star Supa G performing – which was incredible, as well as the beach party down at The Split. The streets were filled for most of the night as everyone made their way from one party to another to make sure they weren’t missing out on anything. But the night ended down at Jello at 5 in the morning with the crowd dragging their sore legs home after hours of dancing. It was a lot of fun!

The Raggamuffin office was closed on Easter Sunday so that the crew could spend the day eating chocolate and relaxing with their friends and families (and to recover from the night before in some cases)…..But we reopened on Easter Monday with full force as people hurried to get themselves a spot on one of our boats going out to Hol Chan. Three full boats went out which was awesome!

It’s always great seeing the island so busy and everyone having such a great time together. It really is a special time of year out here for us…..But then again it’s always a good time out on Caye Caulker :) We hope you all had a wonderful holiday as well!!!

On April 22, 2011 in Caye Caulker, News

I am fortunate enough to Live in Belize and have done for 6 months now and the country has so many beautiful things to offer and i thought i had seen alot. But when my friend Chelsea decided to come visit me from the UK, i really wanted to show her how lucky i am to have all this on my door step.

The Raggamuffin 3 day tour was the perfect way to do it!!

We had an awesome bunch of people onboard to experience this amazing trip with.

Highlights of the trip for me were :

This trip will stay with me forever.

The crew were brilliant, keeping us well fed, hydrated be it Rum, Juice or Water and well entertained!!

Hip Hip Hooray It’s Captain Patrick’s Birthday!

On April 19, 2011 in News, Ragga Crew

On Saturday night the whole crew gathered together to celebrate Captain Patrick’s birthday. It was the perfect night with lots of food, drinks, music and a full moon shining bright above us. Everyone from Raggamuffin was there, as well as all of Patrick’s other friends from the island….Plus some of his family came out from Cayo to join the party which was a great! Captain Patrick has been part of the Ragga Crew for about 7 or 8 years now and is a much loved member of the team. With his big smile, even bigger blonde hair and happy-go-lucky nature, it’s just about impossible not to love him :) …….So there is no way we were going to miss his special night.

By 7pm things were already heating up. The boys were busy at the bbq cooking up a whole lot of lamb (a big treat for us Caye Caulkians) while the rest of us poured ourselves a drink and chatted away together. There was certainly no shortage of food or drinks – which is essential at a Belizean party. And at about 9pm some of Patrick’s friends arrived with their drums in hand and put on a live performance for us. Captain Jerry was the first one up dancing to the Garifuna beats….naturally :) . After that Patrick blew out the candles on his cake while the rest of us song him ‘Happy Birthday’, and then the birthday bwoy advised us that Part 1. of the celebrations was over and that we were going to head over to the Full Moon Party on the north side of the island for round 2. We headed downstairs and loaded ourselves into Jimmy and Charlie’s boat and soon after arrived at the next party were we danced till 3 o’clock in the morning!

Everyone had a great night, but most importantly Patrick had a good time. He was just happy to have all his friends and family there to celebrate with him. And we were grateful to be there.

Happy Birthday Captain Patrick!!!!! We wish you many more. Bless up!

Getting Sandy For The Manatees

On April 16, 2011 in Belize, Caye Caulker, News

Yesterday some of the kids from Caye Caulker Primary School headed down the beach on Front Street, outside Chocolate’s (creator of the Swallow Caye Manatee Reserve), to participate in a sand modelling competition in celebration of Earth Day and also to raise awareness about the conservation of Manatees and their environment. Naturally the kids were thrilled to have an excuse to be out of the classroom, but they were also very passionate about the cause.

They split up in to groups, got creative and started building sculptures of Manatees out of sand. They ran back and forth collecting sand and piling it up and shaping its body. Some groups made just one big Manatee, while others created both a mother and a baby. It was great walking around and seeing all the different interpretations – No two were the same.

Once they were all done the judges walked around to each group and asked them to explain what they knew about the Manatee and describe how they built their sculptures and what they wanted to show. All the kids did such a wonderful job. Lots of people – tourists and locals alike – stopped out of interested and took the time to walk around and see what was going on.

Well done to everyone involved!!! The Manatee is such a BIG, beautiful creature and we need to do whatever we can to ensure its survival…..these kids are doing their part to make sure that happens!

Sunday Is Family Day On Caye Caulker

On April 12, 2011 in Caye Caulker, Culture, News

As the weather warms up on the island families are flocking to The Split to spend their Sundays in the sun and in the water. People come in boats and on bikes or simply on foot, and by lunch time the place is packed. It is such a great site to see the kids running around playing together – rolling in the sand and splashing each other in the water. The sweet sounds of children’s laughter drowns out the music coming from the speakers. The games only stopping when their tummys start to rumble.

With temperatures in the nineties there really is no better place to be then catching some breeze and cooling off in the water down at The Split…all while enjoying the wonderful company of your friends and family.

Sundays are the best!

Road Works – Caye Caulker Style

On April 05, 2011 in Caye Caulker, News

If you have had the pleasure of visiting the hidden treasure that is Caye Caulker, then i am certain that one of the things that you loved most about the island was to be able to walk barefoot through the sandy streets. But you will also know that sometimes it can get a bit bumpy as you ride along on your bike or in a taxi….So to keep Caye Caulker looking its best the town council have been giving the streets a face lift.

Big tractors and steam rollers have been up and down the streets all day, and as you can imagine they look very out of place since the biggest piece of machinery we are used to seeing in the streets is a pickup truck! But they’re doing the job and soon we will all be enjoying a smooth ride up and down the island. As long as there is only sand under our feet and not tar everyone will be happy, because that’s what makes this place so special.

They are also in the process of extending the beach area at The Split at the moment, so when you come visit us next there will be plenty of room for you to sprawl out on your towels and work on your Caribbean tans!

Lots of changes happening….but all for the better!

Raggamuffin’s March Photo of the Month Winner!

On March 31, 2011 in News, Photo of the Month

As always the competition for Raggamuffin’s Photo of the Month was extremely tough. Each month we receive the most incredible shots from you taken on our tours which always makes it hard to pick one winner.

But a decision had to be made, and we are very happy with our choice…..Therefore I am thrilled to announce Tom McBride as our March winner with his awesome photo of Shane, one of our very entertaining crew members, and a fellow passenger back flipping off the top of Ragga Queen. In the past months the winning photos have been of beautiful Rendezvous Caye, showing the stunning locations you get to visit with us, but this time we chose something totally different to show another aspect of our tours. I believe that this photo perfectly captures the free-spirited fun that always takes place on our trips, and is just simply a great action shot. It brings a smile to your face when you see it.

So congratulations Tom!! Your photo will be up as our Facebook profile picture for the entire month of April! Thank you for sending it through to us.

Now the challenge is for all of you to try and top this entry next month…. Let the battle begin and may the best photographer win!!! Good luck!

High & Dry in our New Tents!

On March 19, 2011 in Caye Caulker, News, Ragga Crew

Raggamuffins New Tents

Our last order of new tents has finally arrived and we love, love, love them! These tents have better aerodynamics to withstand the sometimes high winds that can occur on the islands during a trip, and are of course waterproof as well. So even if it happens to be windy or if there is a bit of rain while you are camping out on Rendezvous Caye or Tobacco Caye, you’ll be sitting high and dry in your tent. So now that the last lot of tents has arrived this means that no matter what boat you are on for the 3 day trip, you will have a brand new tent to sleep in.

We are also in the process of putting brand new sails on Ragga King and Ragga Prince at the moment, so we will put up some photos of them when they are completed. At Raggamuffin we always try and updated our equipment as often as we can to ensure that our passengers have the best experience possible with us, and we will continue to update you on any upgrades we make throughout the year……..Hurray for new tents!
