Lobster Fest is not officially underway, but we just wanted to to tingle your taste buds to let you know about a little of what you will be missing out of – or perhaps even taking part of!!!! The lobster is already being prepared this afternoon – the stalls set up and the preparation of lobster is ready to go …
The official Miss Lobster Fest Pageant is currently underway and photos will follow, however, we want to let you into a little secret of what will follow ….
As you can see, the Split has developed their own ‘Greasy pole’ (as yet un-greased) and locals and tourists alike have been practicing their skills for the past 24 hours (some have already perfected it!!!!). The Spilt this afternoon already had that ‘party atmosphere’ and we were there to join … were you???
Be there, or miss out …. LOBSTER FEST 2012!!!!
Each year much time, effort and money goes into maintaining our fleet of boats. June is the month where we commence this work as it is traditionally slow for business. Ragga Prince is the first boat to be hauled up and, as you can see from the photos she has already dried and had numerous repairs to her already.
The wooden boats that are 75% of our fleet are modeled on the traditional wooden fishing boats. Wooden boats need far more maintenance than the lighter fiberglass versions and therefore they are painted twice a year (June and November). The work we do in June entails the boats to be dried out and for repairs such as replacing braces or planks, re-corking and eventually giving the boat that water tight seal (the gluvit) applied liberally to the boat. After the boat has been repaired then the re-painting takes about a week to finally finish off the boat.
The work we do in June is a general re-touch of paint and does not require the boats to get haul out of the water at all.
Ragga Prince, due to the fact that it was originally a fishing boat that we converted to do tours is older than the other two wooden boats (Ragga King and Gal) as they were both made to our specifications. This means that Ragga Prince takes by far the longest to repair and which is why she is always out of the water the first!!
The finished product should be something like the photo above … these boats become an attraction for photographers around the world as they look like a perfectly painted toy for the next few months!!
Guiltily we have to admit that we missed Jacob’s birthday this Friday so we will try and make up for it by telling you just how amazing he is!!!
Firstly, Jacob is not on the island on the moment. As a Belizean/ American that lives in Belize he takes the opportunity for the slower time of the year to slip back and see his family. He will be gone for probably about a month in total but he has already been gone for a couple of weeks and obviously ‘out of sight, out of mind’ allowed for his birthday to slip our mind – shame on us!!
Jacob has been with Raggamuffin for the past 4 years and in this time he has grown from side man to Captain, Tour Guide and Tour Leader – an excellent achievement given the high standards that we set for any of these qualifications. Jacob is yet another crew member that we are most proud of. He is a trusted member of our team – exceedingly professional (despite his tattoo wording!!), excellent sea and sailing skills and very much a member of the team that you can rely on.
Happy Birthday Jacob … although we missed it on Friday, you can guarantee that we will be together enjoying a drink at the split on your behalf tonight!!! (We will post the photo tomorrow to make you jealous!!!!)
As the sponsor of this years Greasy Pole Lobster Fest 2012, it is important that we keep the competition tight and ensure all contestants have a good opportunity to train for this ludicrous game.
We are therefore posting video footage of all three contestants that entered into the Easter Temptation 2012 for those to learn from past entrants errors and tactics to make the game even more interesting.
For those who just want to have a good laugh and criticize the strategies and the efforts of the foolhardy teams that nominiate themselves for this spectacle, enjoy the video BUT remember the date – Sunday 1st August at the Palapa Gardens, Lobster Fest 2012 Greasy Pole – DO NOT MISS IT!!!
Once again Belize tops the voters best of listings and this time, its a big one. Travel and Leisure Magazine is one of the largest (5 million readership) and most respected international travel magazines and websites. The BTB announced last week that in its August edition of this year it will reveal its worlds best travel destinations and of course Belize will be right up there.
Since January of 2012, Belize has received a number of recognitions from a variety of publications around the world including leading travel web and social media sites, magazines and newspapers – However this definitely is one that has the most significance!
Well done Belize!!
Only 10 days to go to the celebration of the year, Caye Caulker’s Lobster Fest 2012!
Each day this week we will be counting down to the party and food fest that locals and tourists mark off on their calendar annually!!
The island is in full preparation with the Miss Lobster Fest contestants have even been cave tubing in their roles in promoting the event. Raggamuffin is officially now sponsoring the ‘Greasy Pole’ competition … we just love to see those suckers slip and slide up and down the pole and each other in their endeavours to get to a bottle of rum!! (Tell them to come on our tour and the rum is free!!! – no need to mutilate yourself!!)
Anyway – if you are sitting on that fence and thinking ‘would that be the kind of thing I would enjoy’, have a leap of faith and get out of your couch and come along and join us – you won’t regret it!!

Today we want to say a big shout out to our wonderful Chilo. 26 years ago today, Chilo was born in the beautiful fishing village of Sartenaja and that is where he is again today, as his mother is baking him a cake for his birthday – ahhhhh!
Chilo has been a new arrival as he became part of our Raggamuffin crew in February of this year. Since then he has become an integral and valuable member of the team as his charm, hard work and professionalism has won the respect of the crew. If you have had the fortune to get to know Chilo you may have experienced his famous ‘belly dance’!! On hearing this many passengers immediately think he will be wining his waist something like Shakira – unfortunately it is not quite as sexy but equally as amusing!!
Happy Birthday Chilo!!
Happy Fathers day to all daddy’s around the world and indeed here in Caye Caulker and Belize. Many of the crew are lucky enough to be fathers, not all though but those who are not will be permitted to join the celebration in anticipation!
Although Father’s day is observed on many different days during the year, here in Belize we follow the more popular date in the Americas with it falling on the 3rd Sunday of June. Father’s Day is celebrated worldwide to recognize the contribution that fathers and father figures make to the lives of their children. This day celebrates fatherhood and male parenting.
Happy Fathers day to one and all!!!
Not good news if you are a lobster but excellent news if you enjoy to eat lobster – the harvesting of one of Belize’s largest exports commences today on 15th June.
For the past four months the Caribbean Spiny Lobster (Panulirus Argus) have felt safe from fisherman and enjoyed their ocean. Fisherman in Belize each year cease farming the lobster to respect the laws the Fisheries have in place to sustain numbers. Lobster fisherman’s catch is on the decline in Belize over the past twenty years due to over-exploitation.
So tonight, if you are here on Caye Caulker or indeed Belize, your food of choice would most likely to be lobster – so, are you staying for dinner??
She is very much the youngest member of the Raggamuffin crew, Zahara Jones, turned three yesterday. In true girly fashion the trees around Raggamuffin were adorned in pink and purple balloons and ribbons – the mermaid pinata swung in the strong breeze of the afternoon.
She invited all her little friends (and some bigger ones like Ellis, Shane & Shane, Chris and Jerry!!) and put on her fairy wings and treated her guests to chips and dip, pinata, cake and goodie bags – all washed down with much soda made for a festive afternoon for the 3 year old!
As the sun began to set and the children began to yawn, the birthday took on a new twist. Zahara and her older brother Malik went home to count their sweets and the rest of the Ragga crew took the party (Raggamuffin style) to the split and eventually the I&I – needless to say heads are hurting this am.
Happy Birthday sweet Zahara!
